New commission!
We new commission as part of DAISY CHAIN produced by Corridor. We will be working with a group of women aged 40+ in partnership with @brightonwomenscentre to make a co-produced film in response to Věra Chytilová's groundbreaking film Daisies (1966), marking it's 60th anniversary. Part of an international project with 5 other commissions in the UK and Czech Republic and the work will be toured in 2027.

testing ideas/work in progress

We’re looking forward to starting workshops for our new commission as part of Corridor’s DAISY CHAIN project. Over the last couple of months we’ve been testing out bubbling ideas and starting points with inspiration drawn from Daisies and collages made during our taster session at @connaughtcinema a few weeks ago.

Daisies film still kindly provided by Second Run ©NFA, 1966. Blu-ray available from Second Run.

DAISY CHAIN is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, with additional support from The Chalk Cliff Trust and NaFilM.

Having some play/planning time together to develop up coming projects and fund raising plans. We often, maybe always start with postcards. Pick 6 each from the big box. Go to a cafe. Take the postcards with us. Talk about and around them, make connections, maybe do some writing…let words, images and ideas emerge…

Great to be part of the exhibition/happening ‘SEEING C SCHOOL’ showing our video ‘The Change’.

On until March 28th
Windows Gallery,
Central Saint Martins,
Granary Square, Kings Cross

Text below taken from @fine_art_csm post:

Art, Performance and Curation at CSM invite you to visit SEEING C SCHOOL. We have built an ‘archive’ of our staff’s artworks and documentation in the Windows Galleries.
The objects, images and artefacts collected here are testament to the advanced practice, research and collaboration present across our teams. Academics, technicians and support staff from the School have submitted a range of items that evidence their thinking and making.
Also included is archival material from the CSM
Museum and Study Collection that records the histories of our courses. Over the show’s duration, items will be selected for display in the adjacent window spaces by C School students to form a curated display of juxtapositions, surfacing synergies and mutual interests. We thank all C School staff for engaging in the project and hope that you enjoy this exhibition as it unfolds over the following weeks.

Really happy that our 360 film STATIC has recently been selected and screened at The Firm Film Festival in Spain recently!
.
.
.
.
STATIC is a 360 video, ideally viewed on a headset (but can also be watched on mobile or desktop devices, with headphones). The viewer is taken into different evocative spaces; a lonely home, a frantic woodland, an ominous landscape of pylons, floating memories and dancing bears. A BSL interpreter tries, and fails, to communicate the story of the central protagonist, a woman isolated and confined in her home, seeking release.

STATIC was developed out of a year's research with survivors of domestic abuse, but also speaks to the situation many people found themselves in during 2020. Coinciding with the challenges of the pandemic and the major increase in reports of domestic abuse, STATIC is also a work about isolation, mental health, loneliness, the struggles of communication and thwarted impetus.

Film by: Cole & Joslin
Music, Song and Sound Design: Isa Suarez
Performers: Lilian Mae Deans Allison, Annis Joslin and Susan Merrick
360 Production Consultant: Michael Danks

One of the things that’s been wonderful about being part of A Seat At The Table @phoenix_artspace is thinking about different ways we can activate the space.

There are a number ways people have been able to engage with the exhibition - drawing, writing, poetry and song (at the open mic event) monoprint and lastly through movement.

Yael Flexer of @flexersandiland led a movement session for us, with ten women in the gallery space responding to the exhibition. It offered some fascinating insights into how the body receives information, how you can understand artworks in a different way and retain these memories through a physical engagement.

The group included women from our SHIFT group and members of her Acting Our Age dance group, some of which were part of the group that were involved with LAZY almost a year ago.

Thank you @flexersandiland and to the group for their generous response.

The wall of chair monoprints is now complete. Thanks to additional workshops in the gallery with @brightonwomenscentre and with the public - thanks to everyone who came along to share stories and drawings.

It’s the last weekend so head down to @phoenix_artspace and don’t forget to take a donation to @phoenixfoodshop and make a still life to add to the still life wall too!

More from last week - on Thursday night we co-hosted with @brightonwomenscentre an open mic night at Phoenix Arts space to a packed gallery and full programme.

Huge thanks to Aflo The Poet who brilliantly compered the night and performered some of their incredible work too.

The idea of an open mic came up form one of the Shift group and a number of the group amazingly performed on the night too along side other insightful, funny and moving contributions by many others. Thank you to everyone who came and performed and to everyone who came along and supported the event.

Big thanks to @brightonwomenscentre for organising and to @phoenix_artspace arts for supporting us to do this in the gallery - We really hope we get the chance to do another one of these some time!

More heartfelt thanks to @startingfiresband for their awesome performance and tech support!

It was such a busy night we didn’t take any photos of at the opening of the exhibition last week. We are going to document the exhibition this week but here are a couple of sneak peaks of the exhibition which ends this Sunday and is open from Weds - 11-5.30.

We want to say a big thank you to Jake Parker who we gave the entire remains of the blown up lazyboy chair to (along with some word and image prompts) and he then brilliantly repurposed it into an object which you can see in the second photo and for real in the space.

@jakemakes13

Also huge thanks to @techtakeback a fabulous Brighton based company that repurpose unwanted electricals. We hired (at a very reasonable price) 4 beautiful screens for 4 of the 5 videos which are in the exhibition. They are also lovely people and are a such a great company - check them out! Thank you to @brightonwomenscentre for introducing us to them!

On Friday we had a fascinating morning @fuseboxbtn
We are collaborating with Chris Chowen, Innovation & Technology Manager at Wired Sussex, is to develop an AI / Open Mic event in September. The idea for an open mic event came from one of the @brightonwomenscentre SHIFT collective and one of the group came and helped us test out what images were thrown up by the AI when responding to spoken word and song. Chris tested out different prompts to the AI to see how broad or particular we could make the response….
